About Discovery
Discovery Church exists to help people discover Jesus and their place in his story.
OUR MISSION
The mission of Discovery Church is twofold.
First and foremost, we strive to help people discover Jesus. Many times, Christians talk about helping others “find” Jesus, as if he is somehow hidden or out of reach.
Jesus is not hiding. In fact, he is actively pursuing us. If we are open to his prompting when he calls us, we are the ones who can discover the joy of being found by him.
Secondly, we want to help people discover their place in God’s story. By accepting his grace and forgiveness, we can start to discover how he wants to work in our lives.
God doesn’t simply want us to be “saved” and stop there. He calls us to be his friends and to play an active role in his story by being obedient to his commands (John 15:14).
Only then can we truly experience the fullness of who he created us to be.
OUR VALUES
WE LOVE GOD.
We believe in the Great Commandment, which begins, “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength.” (Mark 12:30) We exist to promote a love for God. Love for him is fundamental to all other values, purposes, and practices.
WE LOVE PEOPLE THROUGH SERVICE.
The second part of the Great Commandment is, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” That is why Discovery Church emphasizes loving others, and not just those who look, dress, or talk like us. Real love is a verb that extends to every person, and we strive to show that love through active service.
WE ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN GOD’S STORY THROUGH SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER.
At Discovery Church, we know the Bible is living and active. It transforms lives as we live it out. Understanding and interacting with scripture is only one half of connecting to God. The other half is prayer. Without prayer, it is difficult to hear the Holy Spirit speak into our lives. We also learn from the Bible that prayer moves God. That is why we pray expectantly and confidently for God’s will.
WE VIEW WORSHIP AS A LIFESTYLE.
The point of gathering each week is to launch every family and individual into a week of loving God and their neighbors according to his commands. But worship shouldn’t just be something we do on Sundays. Worship is the way we live for God every day and continue to build ourselves into healthy, spiritual followers of Christ.
OUR BELIEFS
ABOUT SCRIPTURE
The Bible is the divinely preserved and inspired Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16) Therefore, we use the Bible as the guide for our counseling, writing, training, worship, and speaking ministries.
ABOUT GOD
God is eternally and simultaneously one and three — Father, Son, and Spirit. (John 17:11, 1 Corinthians 3:16)
ABOUT JESUS
Jesus Christ was, in the flesh, both God and man… and that he died for our sins… and that he rose from the dead. We believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father. (John 1:1-14, 1 Corinthians 15:1-8)
ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is active and alive in believers. He is a helper who convicts us, intercedes for us, and leads us. The Spirit brings gifts to us and others can see the fruit of the Spirit within us. (John 14, John 16, Romans 8, 1 Corinthians 12, Galatians 5)
ABOUT MANKIND
Every person has worth as a creation of God, but all have sinned and fallen short of God’s perfection, making union with God by human effort impossible. (Romans 3:23)
ABOUT FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life are available to all people who will accept the free gift of God’s grace through Jesus Christ. (John 3:16-17)
ABOUT SALVATION
Those trusting Christ should repent of their sins, confess their faith, and be baptized into the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38, Matthew 28:19-20)
ABOUT THE CHURCH
The church is the community of God and the body of Christ on earth and exists to reach those who are far from Christ and to disciple believers. Jesus Christ is the foundation of the church. (Matthew 28:19-20, Matthew 16:18)
ABOUT ETERNITY
Jesus Christ will one day return, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, to take the church to heaven for eternity. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 3:16)
