Meet the new pastor

At an early age God called Matt into ministry with a very clear calling and Matt has been seeking to follow God ever since.

While pursuing his BS in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice, Matt stepped into his first ministry at the age of twenty.  Matt enjoyed the opportunity to serve as the interim youth minister at his growing home church of Southeast Christian Church in Parker, CO.   Desiring to further prepare themselves for ministry Matt and his high school sweetheart, Sarah, moved to Tennessee to attend Emmanuel Christian Seminary in Johnson City.  Matt and Sarah studied hard together and quickly Matt earned his Master’s of Divinity and Sarah received her Master’s of Arts in Religion so she could “be the best minister’s wife possible.”

Clearly following God's call, Matt ministered to First Christian Church in Johnson City, TN for ten years as the Student Ministry Department Head.  Through the work of Matt and his staff, God did wonderful things and the youth ministry grew significantly, spiritually and numerically.  Weekly they would have hundreds of middle school, high school and college students discovering Jesus and giving their lives to following Him.

God continued to develop a passion and desire on Matt's life, during his ministry at FCC Matt had the opportunity to lead dozens of international and domestic mission trips for high school, college and adults.  God also designed an opportunity for Matt to travel to Ecuador with Compassion International's President as a church partner to even further develop his love of mission work.  Missions continues to be part of Matt's heart and passion..

After a decade as a student ministry team, Matt and Sarah felt a clear calling to go into the mission field for a period of two years.  Following scriptures, they sold and gave away all of their belongings –their house, cars, dog, and material possessions.  Then without being able to speak the language, no promise of a job or a permanent place to stay and only five suitcases of belongings, Matt moved his family of four around the world and landed on the island of Taiwan, where God had called them to.

Upon Matt's arrival in Taiwan God quickly made clear his mission was to work with the School For Youth Ministry In English.  During his time at SYME, Matt took over as the Interim Director of the school for a year, leading the staff, interns and adult students to confidently follow God.  This was a wonderful time of ministry, and while many mission organizations were pulling out of Taiwan because of a lack of fruit, God used Matt's work at SYME to bring many people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

At the end of the two years in Taiwan God led Matt and his family to return to Colorado for a season to volunteer at a growing church.  Shortly after, Matt was hired to serve as the Associate Pastor at Legacy Fellowship in Denver, CO, where he had been volunteering.  God used this time to grow Matt in his ability to work in multiple areas of the church.

In 2015 the Lord opened a position for Matt to happily return to East TN and work as the Family Pastor of Discovery Church.  Throughout a time of transition Matt and the wonderful staff, elders and church leaders faithfully followed God's call on their lives to love and lead the congregation at Discovery.  After a lengthy search, the search committee and elders asked Matt to fill the role of Lead Pastor at Discovery.

Matt and his family are humbled by the God given opportunity to lead Discovery in the years to come. Matt's heart’s desire is to follow God and to lead others and this church to follow God as well.

Besides being called to lead the church, almost all of Matt's free time is spent with the most important call of his life, to lead his wonderful family.  Married since 2001, Matt still enjoys every day God has given him with his loving wife Sarah.  After many years of marriage, Matt and Sarah were blessed with three adorable young children Abby, Isaiah and Henry.

God also gave Matt a knack for educating himself.  During his time in Taiwan where American bacon was unavailable, Matt quickly learned to cure and smoke his own homemade bacon.  If you stop by sometime, Sarah just might share some of this fabulous gift from God!
